On our early game drive on the last day at Chobe Game Park (wake-up call 5 am), the first animal we spotted was a family of Spotted Hyenas. Nine of them crossed the highway as the red-orange sun rose on the horizon. Apparently, groups of hyenas this large are almost unheard of in Chobe. There was a little pup who was obviously new to road crossings. He stopped after they had run across the road and watched us watch him. His family had gone into the bush but one adult kept coming back to herd him along. The little guy just wouldn’t budge and sat staring. Finally, the adult managed to chase him back into the bush with the others. I imagine him talking about us for hours and what a strange sight we were. The funny safari hats really got him, I imagine. I think I agree!
We have now completed the “Ugly” list and have checked off the Spotted Hyena along with those other unfortunate animals considered too ugly for even their parents to love.
