We are heading home soon and are beginning to wrap our heads around having to feed ourselves once again. We have spent three weeks enjoying amazing food. All that has been required of us is to show up at the right time and choose a beverage. I don’t know if we’ll be able to manage coming up with shopping lists, grocery stores, deciding what to cook, cooking, and then imagine, cleaning up afterward. Our re-entry is going to be rough, forget the fact that we are coming back 5 plus pounds heavier. Maybe it is the delicious baked goods every few hours that have contributed to the poundage.
In the old Peace Corps days, we were hard-pressed to find any vegetables in Botswana besides cabbage and onion. Our choices of meat were beef, beef, and more beef and then, maybe goat for a little change of pace. This time around we have had fresh vegetables and fruit at every meal along with fresh fish, chicken, lamb, beef, and even kudu – once. Given the hunting ban in Botswana, the kudu was imported from game “farms” located either in Zambia or South Africa. Here in Zambia, kudu and crocodiles are very present on menus. Not being an adventurous eater, I will leave it to Bert, Bill, or Kevin to try the croc.
