On Carcass Island in the Falklands we took a lovely 5 mile hike to see the Magellanic penguins. At about 2 feet tall, they’re not as majestic as the King penguins. Nor are they as colorful as the Gentoos or even as delicate as the Chinstraps. Instead, they are kind of scruffy looking and are seemingly the comedians of the penguin species here. Magellanics build their nests in the scrub brush or dig burrows in the ground rather than building rock nests in congested rockeries. When hungry or maybe just to socialize they head to the beaches to swim and socialize.
The Magellanic penguins are a southern coastal South American and Falkland Islands penguin. They, like almost all penguins here are struggling because their food is disappearing in the warming oceans.
