We are headed to Ecuador! We’ll be staying a short time in Quito then we are on to the Galapagos for almost two weeks—eight days on a catamaran followed by three nights in a hotel on Isabella Island. The last week Kevin and I will be at Sacha Lodge, an eco-lodge located in the Ecuadorian Amazon. After two weeks with our traveling companions, we’ll part ways as they head off to Peru and Machu Picchu.
While I have never been to Ecuador, Kevin visited a very long time ago. He was traveling home from Paraguay where he had been posted with the Peace Corps for two years. Being young and hardy—maybe foolish even—he traveled with his then wife and their barely 2 year old daughter, Rachel. Rach was born in Paraguay. That’s a story unto itself.
While we both have been to the Amazon a few times, neither of us have ever been to the Galapagos. To say we are excited doesn’t describe it. As for many people, the Galapagos is a big item on the bucket list. What is different from past adventures is that we’ll be largely off the grid while on the boat. Odd how you can travel to almost anywhere on the globe now and be connected. I am not unhappy that we are about to visit one last place where connectivity is not a given. I will blog to the degree I can and will certainly continue posting once I am able.
As many times as I have packed for these kinds of adventures, it is always the same laborious task that seemingly takes weeks. And always, it comes down to the same essential question—take the cat or one more pair of shoes?
